I had the same issues too at some point. I even made a ticket for the
missing icons and no one believed me!:)
For the screwed icons you can try - Settings-> Appearance on the xfce
menu (i know that you dont have xfce though) and try to change hinting
to full and subpiksel order to rgb if they are not there already.

It does work, the message is confusing. The message also only appears
if you put the radeon.modeset-0 in an installed system, from the live
cd it does not appear.
